Dr. Sweeney's research program pursues investigations in the broad areas of basic and clinical cognitive neuroscience.

His basic psychological research investigates brain systems that process different kinds of visual information in order to make decisions about how, where and when to make eye movements. This work is central to addressing the question of how perception, behavioral plans and current environmental context are integrated and translated into action.

His clinical studies, closely integrated to this basic work, investigate disturbances of these processes and other psychological domains such as episodic and working memory, problem solving, and form perception in a range of psychiatric and neurologic disorders including schizophrenia, mood disorders and autism. His work involves eye movement, neuropsychological and neurocognitive laboratory research as well as functional brain imaging studies.

His studies have been funded by NIMH, NICHD, NIDA, NINDS, NAAR, and NARSAD.
