Dr. Prensky is a licensed clinical psychologist and
Visiting Assistant Professor within the Department of Psychiatry at UIC.
Clinically, Dr. Prensky is involved in the Health Psychology Service along
with Dr. Susan Labott and Dr. Sarah Shelby, which is part of the
Neurobehavior Program directed by Dr. Neil Pliskin. His clinical interests
involve inpatient and outpatient treatment with individuals who have a
variety of presenting problems including cancer, sickle cell disease,
sleep disorders, and chronic pain. He also provides pre-operative
psychological evaluations for patients planning to have the laparoscopic
adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) procedure. Additionally, Dr. Prensky will
be providing biofeedback-assisted relaxation training services to patients
at UIC in the near future.
Dr. Prensky is also involved in clinical research in the Department of
Psychiatry’s Center for Cognitive Medicine with Dr. John Sweeney.
This research focuses on using biofeedback and related relaxation procedures
to assist patients who are experiencing extreme anxiety about undergoing an
MRI. His previous research was within the area of smokeless tobacco,
examining sensory and behavioral properties of a smokeless tobacco substitute.
Dr. Prensky earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from Texas Tech
University under the mentorship of Dr. Lee Cohen.
He completed his clinical psychology internship (with an emphasis on health
psychology) at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Prensky also
completed a one-year post-doctoral fellowship in health psychology at Loyola
University Medical Center
in Maywood, IL.
