Pauline M. Maki , Ph.D. directs a comprehensive program of research on
hormonal factors that influence cognitive functioning and mood in women. Her primary focus
has been the effects of sex steroid hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone
on cognition and brain function. Her research program comprises a series of observational
studies and clinical intervention trials. She uses neuropsychological and neuroimaging tools
(i.e., positron emission tomography and structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging)
to study estrogen therapy, botanical treatments for menopausal symptoms, testosterone
supplementation, menstrual cycle phase, hormone suppression, and selective estrogen receptor
modulators.
Dr. Maki was a co-PI on the Women's Health Initiative Study of Cognitive Aging and the Study
Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (Co-STAR). She also directs the Neurocognitive Working Group of the
Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), a large, multi-site longitudinal study of women with HIV.
