Metabolic Screening Clinic

Mark E. Schneiderhan, PharmD, BCPP; Catherine Batscha, APRN, BC

As a quality service, a metabolic screening is offered to all clinic clients on antipsychotic agents. The screening clinic is staffed by a board certified psychiatric pharmacist and advanced practice psychiatric nurse who provide assessment of metabolic abnormalities that may be a result of taking antipsychotics. The assessments include: measurements of height, weight, abdominal waist and hip, blood pressure and pulse, a finger-stick glucose and body mass index (BMI). The screening clinic also will ask health related questions about smoking, alcohol, level of physical activity, family history of diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol, and medication history. Recommendations are provided to the client and the psychiatrist that include: a 3 month follow-up repeat visit, fasting glucose and lipids, weight management education group for clients on psychiatric medications and recommendations to follow-up with a primary medicine physician.

There are two ways to access the clinic: A direct referral by your psychiatrist or Walk-in clients are welcome. The screening clinic hours are 2-4 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays in NPI Room 538.
